How often should I charge the GEMshield personal safety device? |
We strongly advise that you charge the GEMshield personal safety device every day so that it can function effectively in an emergency. Hint: Charging the device before bedtime each night will allow sufficent time to recharge the battery. In-car chargers are available on request. |
What is the average battery life of the GEMshield personal safety device? | There is approximately 12 hours normal usage if the tracking option is taken and other functions are frequently used. (This assumes the GPRS is set at the default position reporting intervals of every 15 minutes). |
How do I charge the GEMshield personal safety device? |
You must fully charge the battery before using the device for the first time. Plug the charger into the GEMshield charger connector and connect to a 240 volt wall socket; the device will take 16 hours to charge prior to first use. Thereafter, it will only take 4 hours to fully re-charge. The battery LED will stay on when the battery is charging; if it flashes, please charge the device.<br>There is approximately 12 hours normal usage if the tracking option is taken and other functions are frequently used. (This assumes the GPRS is set at the default position reporting intervals of every 15 minutes). Please note, the device should only be charged with chargers supplied by Peoplesafe. It is important that you keep your device charged to ensure it is ready for your use when you need it. |
How do I know if the GEMshield personal safety device has sufficient battery life to perform all operations? | The battery status light will NOT flash if it has sufficient battery life to perform all operations. The battery light will flash in short sequences when the charge is low. At this point, the device requires charging. The battery light remains lit whilst the device is charging. |
What do the lights mean on the GEMshield personal safety device? |
You may wish to leave a voice memo if you are going into a building or underground, explaining who you are meeting and where, as GPS is less likely to work in these situations. A voice memo can be left by pressing speed dial “Call 1” button for three seconds. The GPS light will start to flash to confirm the request. Speaking clearly, leave your voice message when prompted. To end the call, press the “SOS” button. The voice memo will be available to the ARC in the event of an emergency, providing vital additional information to the controller. |

How do I send a manual position report from the GEMshield personal safety device? |
Press and hold the INFO button for 3 seconds to send the current location of the GEMshield device to the Incident Management Centre. This information is shown on a map relative to where the position report was sent and is stored against your account. It will be accessible in the case of a future incident or when a location report is requested. You can also view this information by logging on to the Customer Service Centre where the position report will be shown on a map. |
The GEMshield GSM light is flashing fast / slow | The GSM light will show a quick single flash when the device is registered to the GSM network and is able to send and receive texts, and place or receive phone calls. If the GSM light shows a double quick flash, the device cannot acquire a GSM signal If the GSM light is flashing very slowly, please contact Customer Support for further assistance. |
How do I switch the GEMshield personal safety device on / off? | To switch the device on and off press and hold the INFO button for 6 seconds. All lights on the left hand side will illuminate when the device is turned on, and they will flash on and off 3 times when the device is shutting down. |
How do I check if the SIM card is properly installed in the GEMshield personal safety device? | To check the SIM card on the GEMshield, you will need to remove the back of the device. Slide the latch and pull the back off. You will find the SIM card underneath the battery. Ensure the SIM card is correctly inserted in the SIM card slot. |
How do I know if the GEMshield personal safety device has recorded my GPS position? |
The GEMshield unit will continuously update its GPS co-ordinates at regular intervals if a signal is available. A flashing GPS light from the unit is a good indication that the unit has acquired an up-to-date GPS position and the information has been stored. Should the unit not have a flashing light or you wish to manually update the current GPS position, press the side on/off button for 1 second until the GPS light starts to flash. Ensure the device has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky as the device will scan for GPS satellites to obtain its position. If you are indoors, place the unit near a window to allow the best possible chance of a successfully-recorded GPS fix. |
Where is the serial number on the Gemshield? | The serial number can be found on the label on the back of your unit. The serial number is found under the IMEI number next to the S/N wording. |
Can I use any SIM card in my GEMshield device? | No. Your GEMshield device has been configured to only work with the SIM card pre-installed in the device prior to shipping. If you replace the installed SIM card with another SIM, you will be unable to raise an alarm to our ARC and the device will not function correctly. |
How do I make a phone call on the GEMshield personal safety device? | Speed dial “Call 2” and "Call 3" buttons will call the phone numbers that you provided during registration. To make a call, press and hold the “Call 2" or "Call 3” button for three seconds. The busy light will start to flash to confirm the request. To end the call, press any of the speed dial buttons. |
How do I send a manual position report from the GEMshield personal safety device? | Press and hold the INFO button for 3 seconds to send your current GPS location to the ARC. This information is stored against your account and will be accessible in the case of a future incident or when a location report is requested. Note, holding the INFO button for 6 seconds will switch the device off. |
